What Are the Symptoms of an Eating Disorder?

Posted on 21. Feb, 2014 by in Eating Disorders

Watching someone you love deal with a complex emotional issue can be heartbreaking, especially if you are unsure of what they are going through. If a close friend or family member seems to be suffering from an eating disorder of any kind, then you may wonder how you can know for sure. Recognizing eating disorder symptoms can help you be aware of the things that you can do to provide help for someone close to you.

There is more than one specific type of eating disorder, but anorexia nervosa may be the most commonly discussed among the general population. Symptoms of this disease include: a fear of gaining weight, low self-esteem related to poor body image, severe restriction of eating, or a sudden drop in weight. If you notice these symptoms, it may be a good idea to speak with the person and offer to get help for them, as anorexia can cause harm to the body and even death.

Bulimia Nervosa has many of the same eating disorder symptoms as anorexia, but with the addition of binging and purging. Eating large quantities of food and then vomiting to avoid weight gain sets bulimia apart from some of the other disorders. Frequent vomiting can cause damage to the esophagus, teeth, and other parts of the body, so it is important that a sufferer receives treatment.

Another type of eating disorder is binge eating, without purging to stop the consequences of eating large amounts of food. Many patients who suffer from binge eating disorder feel out of control during a binge and often eat to the point of pain or discomfort. Intense feelings of guilt or shame are often attached to a binging episode and can be tied to depression as well.

If someone you care about shows these eating disorder symptoms, you should probably take the time to talk to them carefully and gently about what they can do to get better and change their lives.
