Millions of people in America are suffering from chronic pain. Pain is characterized as chronic if its lasts for more than six months. This pain can range from mild to excruciating. It can also be classified as continuous or episodic.   Additionally, the pain can be described as shooting, burning or aching.

Chronic pain is usually accompanied by other symptoms, such as disability, fatigue, sleeplessness and weakened immune system. This condition can take a physical and emotional toll on a person’s life. The good news is that there are a number of things that can be done to manage chronic pain. Injury is one of the many things that can cause this condition. Chronic pain can also be related to the following conditions fibromyalgia, arthritis and nerve damage.

People who suffer from chronic pain need to make sure that they see a physician. Medication, physical therapy,  occupational therapy are some of the treatments that the doctor may recommend for fighting chronic pain. Psychological counseling can help a person deal with the anxiety and stress that comes along with chronic pain. The doctor may also recommend lifestyle changes. For example, people who smoke may be advised to quit. Smoking can impair the healing process and increase the risk of numerous illnesses.

People who drink may be advised to limit their alcohol consumption. Pain often interferes with sleep, and alcohol can make it more difficult for people to get adequate amounts of sleep. Furthermore, resting and light exercise are very effective for fighting chronic pain.
