Three Tricks to Add Convenience to Your Meal Planning

Posted on 22. Sep, 2015 by in Nutrition

Cooking healthy does not mean you have to spend hours every evening preparing a well-balanced meal for you and your family. Here are three tricks you can incorporate into your meal plan for added convenience.

Prepare in Advance

Few things are as convenient as pulling out a ready-made meal from the fridge or freezer and popping it into the oven. Create this very situation by dong a little advanced planning and preparation. Create a meal plan for multiple weeks, and then buy ingredients in one trip to the grocery. Chances are you will also save money by buying in bulk. Set aside a block of time to prep, chop, slice and combine for an array of healthy meals, placing the ingredients for each entrée into its own large freezer bag. Label each clearly, and then place them flat on a freezer shelf, stacking them atop one another. Once frozen, you can organize them upright like books. This takes the preparation time out of your meals for weeks, making you less likely to reach for a less healthy convenience option.

Cook in Bulk

If your family likes a particular meal, there is a good chance they will like it again in a week or two. When you create one of your favorite healthy dishes, double or triple the recipe, then place the extra into freezer containers. Then, when your taste buds are craving that particular recipe, you do not have to begin from scratch to create it all over again.

Food Swap Groups

Who says you have to make all your healthy food yourself? Remove the pressure of coming up with multiple meal ideas and instead organize a food swap with a group of other health-minded friends. Each person can be responsible for one specific healthy entrée that offers a pre-set number of servings. Each serving is then placed into individual containers or sealed bags to be traded with others in the group. If you have five folks involved, this can mean four meal ideas you did not have to conjure up yourself. If preferred, the portions can be pre-frozen to allow for easier transport.

With a little forethought and creativity, a healthy meal plan can be as convenient as the processed items you pass up — and with a much more flavor.
