There Is Power in Positive Thinking

Posted on 18. Aug, 2015 by in Wellness

Positive thinking does not just affect your mood. It can impact your physical health, relationships, and career success. While some individuals are naturally more upbeat than others, optimism can be increased through a variety of tactics.

See the Glass Half Full

If you tend to see the glass half empty, you can change this negative habit by practicing optimism. If you change your habits, you can start to view your life more positively. Try one or both of these:

  • Gratitude journal: Simply by noticing all that is right in your world, you can increase your level of happiness. Pick a time of day that works best for you and for 30 days, consistently write down three things you are grateful for. They do not have to be huge things, because small blessings are very important, too.
  • Rubber band technique: Wear a rubber band around your wrist. Every time you have a negative thought, snap it. This may feel like a silly technique, but it is a great way to change your patterns and stop negative thoughts from escalating.

It Does More Than Improve Your Mood

Positive thinking can do more than improve your mood. Many other areas of your life can shift when you begin to embrace optimism. For example:

  • Physical health: Positive thinkers live longer and are healthier than negative thinkers. Optimists have less heart disease, stronger immune systems, and sleep better than pessimists.
  • Relationships: Cheeriness spreads, just like bad moods spread. The more upbeat you are, the more people will be drawn to you. Try smiling and watch those in your world smile back.
  • Career success: Optimists have can-do attitudes, which leads them to take more classes, apply for more promotions, and tackle challenging projects. When people think they can or cannot do something, they are usually right.

Thinking positively can impact your life in a multitude of great ways. If you are not naturally cheery, you can retrain yourself so the glass starts appearing full. Once you incorporate positive habits into your daily routine, many surprising changes are likely to occur.
