What is the Zika Virus?

The Zika virus is a type of virus that is spread through mosquito bites. Outbreaks of the Zika virus have been reported in Southeast Asia, Africa and the Pacific Islands. There have been a few cases reported in the United States. However, the people in the United States who were infected with the Zika virus had recently traveled to another country.

The Zika virus is transmitted by the Aedes mosquito. This type of mosquito is found in many parts of the world. It is likely that outbreaks will develop in new countries.

Symptoms of the Zika Virus

Many people who are infected with the Zika virus do not have any signs or symptoms. However, people who do have symptoms are likely to experience fever, headache, muscle pain, joint pain and red eyes. The symptoms can last for several weeks. It is rare for a person’s symptoms to be severe enough to require hospitalization.

Most people who develop the Zika virus recover within a few weeks without any long-lasting complications. However, the Zika virus is dangerous for pregnant women. Pregnant women who contract the Zika virus are at an increased risk of giving birth to a baby with birth defects.

The Zika virus can increase the risk of microcephaly, which is a condition where the baby’s brain does not develop properly. As the result of this, the baby has an unusually small head. The Zika virus can also increase the risk of Guillain-Barre syndrome. This is a condition where the immune system attacks the nerves.

There is no vaccine available for the Zika virus. No medications are available to treat this condition. People with the Zika virus will have to rest and drink plenty of fluids in order to prevent themselves from becoming dehydrated. Over-the-counter medications, such as acetaminophen, can reduce fever and pain. However, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as Naproxen and ibuprofen, should be avoided. Aspirin should also be avoided.
