Keep Active This Winter

Posted on 11. Nov, 2014 by in Wellness

During the winter months, it is easy to become a hermit. With the cold weather and dark evenings, you probably just want to stay at home and curl up with a good book. You still need to exercise, especially if you spend all day behind a computer at a desk. Try these ways to stay active during the winter without a lot of extra planning and money.

One easy way to keep active is to take the stairs. If you work on the 20th floor that might seem daunting, so take the elevator to the 18th floor then go up just two flights instead of tackling the whole thing. On your way out of the office, do the same thing in reverse. If you do not have stairs at your work, park a little farther away and walk to your office.

Other ways to stay active during the winter are to find indoor activities that you have always wanted to try. Sign up for a ballroom dance class, bowling league, or karate workout. Ask a friend or family member to attend with you if you need the motivation. You will meet new people and enjoy learning new skills.

You could join a gym. Do it before the holidays hit and by the time you are ready to make New Year’s resolutions, you will be in the habit of going. Hire a trainer to keep you accountable and make sure that you are exercising safely. Make realistic goals and do not overdo the workout to keep it fun and enjoyable. It is not a chore that you have to do, but a way to get out of the winter rut.

There are a lot of great winter activities you can do with your family. Making a snowman, ice skating, and skiing are all great ways to stay active during the winter and enjoy fun exercise. You have to make staying active a priority in your life and find the opportunities that interest you.
