Eating a healthy diet is an important part of maintaining a nourished body and life. Although with the barrage of fad diets and super foods hitting the airwaves and magazine covers, it can be difficult to even know where to start. However, by exercising on a regular basis and following a diet full of healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, you can feed your body and mind with wholesome and tasty nutrition.

Protein is an essential part of any diet, for it builds and maintains muscle mass and gives your body sustaining energy. An easy way to increase your intake of protein is by eating a handful of nuts for your morning or afternoon snack. Almonds are a great source of fiber, calcium, vitamin E, iron, and magnesium. They also contain monounsaturated fat, which has been known to help lower the level of cholesterol. They are delicious when added to other healthy foods such as dried fruit, veggie dishes, or even a bowl of oatmeal.

In addition to protein, our bodies also thrive on the vitamins and minerals found in fruits and vegetables. A ¾ cup serving of blueberries contains 10.8 milligrams of vitamin C and 2.7 grams of fiber. They are delicious added to a salad, a bowl of cereal, or even atop a small bowl of low fat ice cream or frozen yogurt. Apples are another powerhouse food full of soluble fiber, vitamin C, and cancer preventing anti-oxidants. Apples can also be used in a variety of recipes alongside other healthy foods.

Vegetables, either frozen or fresh, hold many nutritional benefits as well. Carrots and sweet potatoes are full of potassium, vitamin A, and fiber. They are delicious sliced and roasted in the oven with some olive oil and sea salt, blended into soups, or tossed into pots of stew. Green leafy vegetables such as kale, broccoli, spinach, and romaine lettuce contain high amounts of vitamins C, A, and K, as well as calcium and potassium. Kale and broccoli are easy to steam, and spinach and romaine lettuce are perfect for tossing into salads.

These are just a few of the many healthy foods available to you today. They are easy to find and cook with and might just leave you feeling energized and ready to face whatever comes your way.
