Handy Tips for Healthier Cooking

Posted on 11. May, 2015 by in Nutrition, Wellness

One of the key components of any weight loss strategy is maintaining a healthy, balanced diet. By cooking your meals from scratch, you are giving yourself a great head-start. Preparing more of what you eat makes it easier to stick with healthier ingredients while avoiding many of the preservatives and additives often present in more convenient food alternatives. There are plenty of simple ways to make sure that each meal will fit with your goal of a smaller waist size and a healthier lifestyle.

Put Veggies on Your Table

Any fitness buff or nutritionist will tell you that eating more vegetables is one of the best ways to slim down. Veggies are packed with vitamins, fiber, and potassium—plus they fill you up. Beans fit into this same food group, and make for a great meat substitute both in flavor and protein content. Use them in salads, tacos, and other dishes for a lighter, healthier alternative.

Hold the Mayo

There is room for mayonnaise in a balanced diet, preferably low- or no-fat, and always in moderation. However, depending on what type of dish you are preparing, there are plenty of smart fill-ins for mayo. Hummus and other Mediterranean spreads have grown in popularity for their smooth, spreadable texture and rich flavor. Mustard is another great option for keeping the calorie count down—but keep your eye on the sodium content.

Go With the Grain

The American Heart Association recommends consuming foods made from whole grains, as opposed to refined grains, which have been stripped of their healthy bran exterior. Choose whole-grain bread and brown rice to avoid missing out on important nutrients. These types of foods also make you feel fuller, helping keep portion sizes under control.

Cooking for weight loss does not have to be boring or less flavorful. In fact, many people quickly find that the taste of lighter meals made with fresh ingredients can be much more satisfying. The immediate and long-term health benefits of maintaining a healthy weight are numerous, from helping control blood pressure to easing joint pressure. Start cooking healthier today for a healthier tomorrow.
