Getting Happy

Getting happy may take a little work, but it has great advantages. Make it a priority lifestyle change and you will find smile bigger by the day.


Higher levels of happiness correlate to lower levels of stress. This, in turn, means you are less likely to have high blood pressure and other stress related issues. Studies have shown that those who exhibit higher levels of happiness tend to have higher tolerances to pain, resulting in less distress when sick or injured. A positive mindset has also been shown to be extremely beneficial for those battling chronic diseases and even in fights against cancer.


While it may seem like common sense, it can actually be difficult to see the effect not being happy can have on your relationships. If you are extremely unhappy with a situation at work, that unhappiness can seep into other areas of life, contaminating otherwise healthy relationships. Finding your happiness can lead to stronger and more fulfilling personal interactions.

Tips to Get Happy

So, how do you get happy? Here are a few tips.

  1. 1.       Meditation and yoga: Be still and reenergize your mind, body and spirit. Learn deep breathing techniques and stretches that are conducive to a more relaxed you. Both meditation and yoga have been shown to decrease stress levels and result in a positive outlook.
  1. 2.       Exercise:Get moving. The more you move, the more your body releases endorphins, which are natural pain killers. This leaves you happier and with a natural “high.” It is for this reason that exercise can be considered “addictive.”
  1. 3.       Comedy:It is virtually impossible to be unhappy when you are laughing. Even if you are trying your best to hold it in, seeing and hearing comedy can lift your spirits and put you into a happier mindset. Watch a comedy, go to an improve show, check out a stand-up comedian, or simply find a funny friend with great comedic timing and let yourself laugh out loud.
  1. Surround yourself with positivity: Spend less time with people in your life who are negative and surround yourself with those who value happiness and positivity as much as you. If you have unhappy situations in your life, take a solid look at them and see how you can change them or remove them altogether.

Being happy is often a choice. Make the choice and reap the benefits.
