Discover the Health Benefits of Going Vegan

Posted on 27. Jan, 2014 by in Wellness

It is increasingly common to see vegan products at supermarkets and restaurants, as more people discover the benefits of this diet.  Removing animal products from your diet or overall lifestyle offers many advantages, and one of the most appealing is the improvement in personal health.  There are several established vegan health benefits that make the diet a smart choice for anyone concerned with both daily well-being and long-term health.

A vegan diet offers many day-to-day benefits.  Many people feel more energetic, and some even enjoy relief from conditions like allergies or migraines.  Since a vegan diet excludes many sources of saturated fats, it is conducive to weight loss; research indicates that vegans generally have a lower Body Mass Index than their omnivorous counterparts.  Some vegans also develop healthier hair, skin, and nails.  A few studies even suggest that vegans live longer on average, possibly because of the role a vegan diet plays in disease prevention.

Eliminating animal products from the diet offers several long-term health benefits.   Dietary cholesterol is found only in animal products, so people on vegan diets enjoy lower cholesterol levels.  Research shows that vegans may have a lower risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.  Studies also suggest that vegans have a lower risk of developing certain types of cancer, including breast and colon cancer.  The full range of long-term vegan health benefits deserves further study, but present research indicates that a balanced vegan diet can only improve long-term health.

Of course, it is important for anyone adopting a vegan lifestyle to make sure to eat a balanced and nutritious diet that includes green leafy vegetables, seeds and nuts, and products like soy.  These provide essential nutrients like iron, calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12.  Vegans whose diets are narrow may not experience many of these vegan health benefits.  However, vegans who eat a varied and complete diet can see significant improvements in their long-term health and the way that they feel on a daily basis.
