Consider Improving Your Mental Health as Your New Year’s Resolution

When many people think of New Year’s resolutions, they often think of eating healthier or exercising more. What most don’t think of? Improving their mental health. Improved mental health can help support any dietary or exercise goals and can help with your overall day-to-day happiness.

Want to work toward feeling better in the new year? Here are four ways you can improve your mental health in 2016:

1) Meditate.
With apps like Breathe and Pacifica, mediation is easier than ever. These apps help train you to practice mindful thinking and can guide you through the appropriate breathing process. To get started, try meditating for just five minutes a day. As the year goes on, aim to lengthen your meditation times.

2) Complete daily gratitudes.
By focusing on the good things in your life, you can help rework the way your brain thinks and reacts to everyday situations. The positive things you identify are called gratitudes. To get started with this, try documenting three good things in your life each day. Whether you record these in an online document, blog or simply a journal, documenting these gratitudes every day can help improve your happiness and overall mental health.

3) Establish a support system.
When things get tough, it’s good to know you have a group of people you know you can turn to. A solid support system will be there when you need to vent or simply just talk through the day. As you enter the new year, identify a core group of four or five people that understand your quest for better mental health and who will help you work toward achieving this.

4) Consult with the professionals.
Although the above points are a good place to start improving your mental health, you may also want to consult with medical professionals. They may advise additional strategies to improve your mental health, and, after a full evaluation, may also recommend a therapist or provide medication to help you support your efforts.
